Media Release: Bounce to Fitness with CANSA & ReboundSA

9 February 2021 – CANSA is partnering with ReboundSA to present a national Bounce-a-thon taking place in over 20 locations across the country on 20 February 2021. ReboundSA has recently been awarded CANSA’s Smart Choice Seal of Recognition, as physical activity helps to lower the cancer risk.

Leillani Geduld, CANSA’s Corporate Relationship Coordinator hopes that people will take advantage of the opportunity to improve their fitness, while supporting cancer patients and to invite nine friends to join them, to celebrate CANSA’s 90 years of service.

“Have some fun with friends and family and bounce your way to good health. We’ll have strict COVID-19 safety protocols in place at all venues and all participants will be expected to arrive half an hour prior to the event for this reason and to wear a mask, sanitise hands and maintain physical distancing. For those who would prefer online, a limited number of Zoom classes will be available, and they can rebound in the safety of their own homes,” explains Geduld. #CANSABounceAThon #CANSAactive #LowerCancerRisk #FeelGoodFun

Tickets can be purchased online through Quicket at R100 per entry. Events take place from 8:00 until 16:00 on 20 February as indicated per venue. Each participant receives a free Digital Book ‘Rebounding for Health and Fitness’ to the value of R150 and access to CANSA’s Healthy Lifestyle Risk Assessment to assess cancer risk (free). They will also be entered into a draw and stand a chance to win amazing prize. *. All participants should note the event disclaimer.”

Keith and Justine McFarlane, owners of ReboundSA, say, “Rebounding is a high cardio, low impact workout performed using a mini-trampoline (rebounder). Rebounding is not just a fun way to get moving, it also holds a wide range of overall health benefits. Rebounding has phenomenal immune supporting benefits on the body, particularly the lymph system. For this reason, rebounding is recommended as part of a cancer fighting strategy. Rebounding is further good for people living with cancer as a gentle low impact form of exercise. [1-2] In his book Jumping for Health, Dr Morton Walker says that just two minutes of rebounding offers equivalent physiological benefits as six minutes of running, 10 minutes of swimming and 22 minutes of walking.”

Geduld continues,” We’re still caring for cancer patients and loved ones despite COVID-19 and we invite the public to show they care too by participating in the Bounce-a-thon to help raise sufficient funds for us to continue to do so. During lockdown, our Homes and stoma services stayed open as essential services with protective measures while the public hospitals were open and receiving patients. CANSA Care Homes catered for patients receiving cancer treatment with accommodation, transport and meals. CANSA’s TLC Lodges for children and families affected by cancer also remained operating. We offered support via our WhatsApp line that helps with cancer education, queries and support in isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho and siSwati (071 867 3580) and support via phone and online platforms. CANSA also offered confidential, professional, cancer-related telephonic counselling to cancer patients, caregivers and their families and parents or guardians of children living with cancer. Counselling is available in seven languages (English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, siSwati, Sesotho and Setswana) and is free of charge.”
