Motorvaps False Bay and CANSA Unite to Tackle Cancer Awareness Through the Power of Rugby

08 Aug 2026

One match. One cause. One community is standing together against cancer. On 8 August 2026, the Motorvaps False Bay team will take to the field against the Maties wearing more than just a rugby jersey. They will wear a powerful symbol of hope.

In partnership with Motorvaps and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), the club will unveil its limited-edition CANSA commemorative rugby jersey, honouring the resilience of cancer survivors, remembering those we’ve lost, and standing with the thousands of South African families whose lives have been touched by cancer.

This landmark event demonstrates how sport can inspire change beyond the scoreboard. It is a call for communities to unite, start meaningful conversations about cancer awareness, and show that no one faces cancer alone.

Greig Hains, Chief Executive Officer at Moving Capital (Pty) Ltd, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to have supported Motorvaps False Bay for the past five years. Through our ongoing sponsorship, we’ve seen first-hand how sport brings families together, strengthens communities, and creates opportunities that extend far beyond the rugby field.

Supporting CANSA through this special initiative is a natural extension of those values. If we can use the game, we love to encourage conversations, raise awareness, and stand alongside those affected by cancer, then we’ve achieved something far greater than the final score. Together, we’re building stronger communities, creating lasting memories, and reminding people that hope grows when we stand united.”

Adding an international dimension to the occasion, Motorvaps False Bay is proud to welcome 125 visitors from New Zealand, strengthening the bonds of friendship through sport while supporting a cause that transcends borders.

The day promises more than world-class rugby. Families, supporters, and the wider community are invited to take part in activities designed to raise awareness and spread hope, including:

  • Shavathon – spray hair for free in a variety of colours, proudly sponsored by Motorvaps.
  • Community activations supporting CANSA and its ongoing work in cancer education, awareness, and support.

Every jersey represents a life touched by cancer. Every supporter sends a message that they are standing alongside every person affected by cancer. Together, we can turn the passion of rugby into a powerful force for awareness, hope, and action. Cancer affects thousands of South Africans every year, but awareness, early detection and community support save lives.

Graham Oberholzer, Chairman of Motorvaps False Bay, added:

“False Bay has always been more than a rugby club. We’re a community, and this partnership with Motorvaps and CANSA gives us the chance to prove it. Rugby has a unique power to bring people together; players, families, supporters, even old rivals, around something bigger than the result of the day.

Pulling on that CANSA jersey against Maties will mean something different to every player who wears it. For some, it’s a grandmother. For others, it’s a teammate, a coach, and a friend. Every one of us knows someone who’s been touched by cancer, and this is our chance to honour them properly.

I’d ask our members, our supporters, and the wider Cape Town rugby community to come down to Constantia on 8 August. Stand with us. Wear your colours. Let’s unite as a community.”

Leillani Geduld, CANSA Corporate Relations & Sporting Events Manager, said:

“Partnerships like this with Motorvaps False Bay demonstrate the incredible impact that communities can have when they come together behind a common purpose. Cancer affects individuals, families and entire communities. Whether you are newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, supporting a loved one or remembering someone you have lost, we want you to know that CANSA can help. Through our care and support programmes, health education, screening initiatives, counselling and advocacy, we strive to ensure that every person affected by cancer has access to information, hope and compassionate support.

We encourage the community to support CANSA not only by attending events like this, but by volunteering, donating, participating in our fundraising initiatives, becoming a CANSA Active supporter, sharing trusted cancer information, and encouraging family and friends to prioritise cancer risk reduction and regular screening. Together, we can create healthier communities and ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.”
