Support CANSA Active Champions at Virgin Active Ride Joburg!
On 17 November, our CANSA Active champions will be taking part in the Virgin Active Ride Joburg cycling event to raise awareness and support for those affected by cancer. As they cycle through the heart of Johannesburg, each pedal push represents dedication, resilience, and a powerful message of hope.
We invite you to join us in cheering on our champions and supporting their fundraising efforts. Every contribution counts and goes towards CANSA’s vital care and support programmes, which provide assistance to cancer patients, survivors, and their families across South Africa.
Meet our champions:
Hennie van Eeden – https://www.givengain.com/project/hennie-raising-funds-for-cansa-active-85221
I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer on 30 November 2021. I started chemotherapy two weeks later on 10 December 2021 until 03 June 2022 (6 months worth). During period I had an emergency colostomy operation due to the cancer being irritated by the chemotherapy and causing an obstruction in the colon. Radiotherapy treatment followed from 11 July to 19 August 2022. On 21 September 2022, I went in for surgery to remove the shrunken / treated cancer – 7cm of the colon was removed including the stoma / colostomy on the colon and another stoma /colostomy was performed on the small intestine to ensure that the colon healed adequately after re-joining. The final small intestine colostomy reversal was done on 17 January 2022. This treatment and surgery all happened within a period of 14 months.
I am currently in remission, year 2 of 4, and all scans done to date are clear of cancer.
Many thanks to all the medical doctors, medical personnel, my family and friends for all your support and words of encouragement during this period. Also, a special thank you to my beautiful wife for supporting and being there for me, and to the LORD ALMIGHTY walking next to me and, when it got tough, for carrying me.
My life is back to normal and energy levels increasing daily. I have been training for this cycling event since January this year and looking forward crossing the finish line,
I am in a privileged position to cycle the 97 km on 17 November 2024 and will appreciate any donation to CANSA Active in support of all cancer fighters. Believe me it is a tough and costly journey!
