Big And Small At Cycle4CANSA
The message for this year’s 22nd staging of the popular Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Championship, presented by the Optimum Group at Sun City, is very simple – to support the fight against cancer Cycle4CANSA!
The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) has launched a concerted drive to highlight the initiatives around the presentation of Cycle4CANSA on 24 and 25 August 2019.
Proceeds from the event are donated to CANSA and riders have the opportunity of donating funds during the entry process. More than R4 million has been donated to CANSA in the 22-year history of the event.
“Entry figures for the weekend festival continue to grow, courtesy of meticulous attention to organisational detail and our extensive rider and media database marketing. However, the biggest contributor to the growth remains the support from the cancer community,” said race organiser Mauritz Meyer from Hectic Promotions.
Hectic Promotions, a registered non-profit organisation, manages two mass participation road cycling events which attract a combined field of 12 000 cyclists.
Cycle4CANSA is now in its 22nd year of presentation and 2018 saw the second edition of the big Tshwane Classic, which attracted 5000 cyclists in its first staging and 7000 cyclists last year.
“We’d like to call on everyone to support the Cycle4CANSA cause. Besides funds generated through the organisation and sponsorships, many riders take part on the back of personal fund-raising or awareness initiatives. They support a friend or family member in need or who suffers with the disease. We assist as much as possible to create awareness for them through our channels.
“The disease has a different personal meaning and effect on everyone. Cycle4CANSA provides a platform for these voices to be heard and causes to be supported. So, support the cause and Cycle4CANSA,” said Meyer.
Cycle4CANSA is a monument of the sport in South Africa and the old favourite received an incredible injection in 2016 when the road race was able to return to its original route. This was made possible by presenting the road race on the Sunday instead of the Saturday during the weekend cycling festival.
This has seen the entrant numbers for the road race increase significantly while it also saw a bigger uptake on the mountain bike leg of proceedings, which, of course, moved to the Saturday.
Sun City has put together special accommodation packages for the Friday and Saturday evening over race weekend and these also include breakfast. More info is also available on www.cansalostcity.co.za
The Road Classic offers distances of 103km and 70km and takes place on Sunday, 25 August. The MTB Classic, which presents 25km and 50km route options, fills the Saturday slot (24 August) over the weekend cycling festival.
The road race route is fast and flat and is popular as a post winter ride. It enables riders to shake off the winter cobwebs on a route that doesn’t break their spirit.
Because it takes place on a Sunday, traffic conditions are quiet and perfectly suited to presenting a mass participation race in safe surroundings.
The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Road Classic is a premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
The casino resort offers convenient and safe parking as well as a variety of family entertainment options once the racing is done, including free entry into the Valley of Waves.
