Road Closures Implemented for Staging of Cycle4CANSA 2018

Chief organiser of the 21st Bestmed Cycle4Cansa Championship, Mauritz Meyer, has announced that various road closures in and around Sun City will be implemented to enhance rider safety during the event’s road races on Sunday, 26 August 2018.

The 103km and 70km events, presented by Optimum Financial Services, get under way from 6.30am and most notably the R510 – between the R556 and Monakato which riders access after 20km on the route – will be closed between 6am and 12pm.

“This closure really of immense importance to the event as this road doesn’t boast a broad shoulder. We’ve always put the rider first and we are working closely with local authorities to pinpoint crucial areas on the route to ensure that we leave no stone unturned to ensure rider safety,” said Meyer.

“We’ve had a significant buy-in from the local authorities and we hope that, together, that we can raise awareness and get people to avoid this area on Sunday.”

With 4 000 participants expected this year for the road races alone, Meyer said their number one focus was on ensuring a safe passage for everyone who took part.

Two years ago, organisers made a call to move the road races to the Sunday to avoid the heavy mining traffic that passed through the area and this was well-received.

Apart from the road events, the 21st edition of the Bestmed Cycle4Cansa features 25km and 50km mountain bike races on Saturday. These pass through the Gary Player and Lost City golf courses as well as the neighbouring Letsatsing Game Reserve.
